Dola and Daisy-Grace

Dola and Daisy-Grace

My full name is…
IbiDola Sogbesan.

But my friends call me...
Dola.

I grew up...
In Lagos, Nigeria.

My cultural background is...
I am a Yoruba - Nigerian woman.

My bedroom window...
Has a view of the countryside we live in and the sunrise every morning is beautiful.

Daisy-Grace’s name came from…
Her being born in the summer, and my love for daisies remind me of my feelings throughout pregnancy and the quick delivery (Daisies symbolise purity, childbirth, and motherhood). And it was the GRACE of God.

So we added both together.

Her full name is Monioluwa Daisy-Grace (meaning I have God’s Grace)

The activity I love to do most with my family is...
Having meals together either at home, in a garden or the park and exploring nature and life together.

You will usually find me...
Making photographs, eating pasta or writing or curating ideas or exploring art.

My daily ritual is...
I wake up every day between 6 am and 6:30 am; I pray and do 10 mins yoga, brush my teeth, shower and do my face and body routine. Write down my thoughts and go through my plan of the day. Then between 7 am and 8 am, my daughter ‘little daisy’ wakes up. We do her morning routine, and then have breakfast together; our go-to is oats and berries with seeds of choice or egg toast and avocado. After this, we play together, go on a walk, have a nice drink, and I go straight to edit or writing - if it is a photoshoot day, we do that first and then go on a walk afterwards.

I am where I am today because of...
God’s Grace and my quickness.

I first discovered photography...
While studying Marine biology in Uni.

But before that, I pursued...
Modelling.

Photos give me...
Joy.

I am inspired by...
Nature, and my culture and tradition.

I also find inspiration as a mom and everyday moments in my daily life. I love classic art and other women painters who tell stories of the beautiful lives of mothers.

I find comfort in...
Quiet time - hearing my thoughts.

I feel womanly when...
I take care of my body (spiritually and physically).

Three words to describe me are...
Quirky, kind and calm.

Something people don’t know about me...
I am an introvert and have a great sense of humour.

I am my happiest when...
I tell a beautiful story through photographs.

I relax...
By sleeping, doing a bath soak or watching old movies over again.

My favourite body part is...
I don’t have a favourite body part.

My favourite snack is...
Mashed avocado and plantain chips.

I love listening to...
S
oulful and calm music.

My favourite childhood memory...
The day my parent bought me my first camera - a little pink camera. I took photos all summer.

I am moved by...
Little mundane moments.

I am grateful for...
My life, family and art.
